Sports Waiver: What Is It?

A sports waiver is used for both minors and adults who participate in a sports setting. With a sports waiver, the player along with the player's parents (if the player is a minor) accept responsibility for the risks associated with playing the sport and agree to not hold the team or organization legally liable if an injury occurs. Regardless of whether the participant is an adult or a minor, many sports teams and organizations will not allow the participant to attend practice or play in a game without a signed sports waiver.

A sports waiver is generally classified into two categories: minors and adults. Sports participants (and parents of minors) sign a sports waiver to release the organization or team from being legally responsible in the event that participation causes an injury. In many cases, players won't be allowed to participate in practice or in games unless a sports waiver is signed.

What is Sports Waiver For?

A sports waiver is used to limit the legal liability of a sports team or its supporting organization in the event that a player is hurt during practice, during a game, or during some other event that the team participates in.

Why Use a Sports Waiver?

You should use a sports waiver if you are the coach or otherwise sponsoring or working for a sports team that allows minors or adults to play for free or for a fee. This helps protect the sports organization or team from lawsuits that may arise because a player is hurt during practice or during a game.

Who Should Use a Sports Waiver?

Community clubs, work-sponsored sports clubs, school-based sports programs, church-based sports programs, and other sports organizations should require participants (or their parents for minor participants) to sign and date a sports waiver before attending a practice or participating in a game. This can help limit the legal liability of the sports organization, team, or coach in the event of an injury.
