Construction Change Order: What Is It?

A Construction Change Order is used by a construction company to submit changes to a current work order. It could be adding something new to the contract or taking something off of the existing order. A change order may be used if the estimate for the original project is wrong, if obstacles are occurring in the construction, or if additional options and work is wanted by the customer.

The project manager will typically be the one to draw up the change order. This document should describe the specific changes being made to the original contract. They will also need to include the adjusted price for the project, including the new or removed options. Both parties involved will need to look over this new change order and approve it before work can be continued or altered. This document will then function as an addendum to the original contract.
